Aransas Pass Bass Fishing Report January 25, 2011

This week on Lake Fork the water is 3 1/2 feet low and the water temp. is high forty’s to low fifties depending where on the lake you are. With the winter weather and low water the bite is slow but you can catch a giant on any cast this time of year. Pre spawn is just about upon us and the low water will help concentrate the fish. Stumps are up everywhere with more below so be careful and wear your life jacket. Best bet is a red or orange lipless crank and a black and blue jig and pig. Fish the lipless crank over grass on main lake and secondary points and flat grass beds. Slow will be key. Just tickle the grass. I fish a 3/4 oz. on 20 pound line with a 7 1/2 foot crank rod. Hold the tip up on retrieve and pump it when you hit the grass to accelerate and change direction. This is when most strikes occur. On the jig target creek channel bends. Work it slowly to get bit. I use a 1/4 ounce jig and the large Lake Fork Tackle pig claw in black with blue claws. Crawfish will also get you bit. Another trick is to swim the jig over the grass like the crank. The suspending jerk bait will also work. The colder the water the longer the pause. Right now you can take a nap between twitches! Swim baits are a good bet this time of year fished near the creek mouths over the creeks. Remember that guides and motels book up early so book early to ensure your dates. Hope this helps on your next trip to Lake Fork and we’ll see you on the lake!
