Lake Fork Bass Fishing Report April 20, 2007

This week on Lake Fork the water is down about a foot and it appears it will stay there as the gates on the dam have been opened last week to keep the level it is at. The water temperature is 65 to 70 degrees depending where in the lake you are. The fishing this week has been good with the average fish at about 5 lbs. We have been working long banks leading out to main lake points. Most of our fish came from the edge of thick grass beds and timbered flats. The best lures on cloudy days has been either a shad swim bait or a bandit 100 in shad pattern. The top water bite has been good on Yellow Magic’s in a shad pattern. The fish are gorging on yearling Gizzard shad. Spinnerbaits in white have been boating there share of fish. These baits are reaction baits and work best on cloudy days or early or late in the day. Look down at your bait to see if there are shad swimming with your lure and you will know you are in the right area to catch these fish. If not keep moving ’till you connect with the bait. Remember if the bait is not there the schools of fish aren’t either. This does not mean you can’t catch a fish but that the large schools are not there. If the day turns blue bird and the reaction bite slows, go to a Sticko-o in watermelon or cinnamon purple or a fluke in watermelon with a dip dyed tail and slow down. There is also a deep crank bait in you guessed it shad pattern. Carolina rig bite on humps and roadbeds and points with deep water has been coming on also. . Most of these fish are early spawners on the way out to the deep. As you see there is plenty to do on Lake Fork so get on the lake! I hope that this helps you catch a program fish but you better hurry, the Share a lunker program closes at the end of the month. I have May 7th and 11th open so if I can help you let me know.
