Lake Fork Bass Fishing Report February 24, 2010

This week on Lake Fork the water temp. is in the upper 40’s and the lake level is at full pool. Lake Fork is in prime condition for the upcoming spawn. The bite has been tough and may continue for the next few days untill we warm up from this cold front. When it does the fishing should improve. I have been doing better in the afternoons as the water warms and this is the norm. for this time of year. Look for protected pockets with warmer water and you should connect with some fish. Grass cover seems to be the best now as it warms first. On a warm day look to the sunny side of the wood. Yes I know this is opposite of what you learned about predator and prey and I have harped on the fact that ambush points need to be shady but it’s cold and the fish want to warm up and the sunny side is the place. In the next couple of months you will see fish suspending just under the surface especially around docks just trying to warm up. Best baits have been red lipless crank baits on a medium retrieve over 3 to 6 foot grass. Suspending jerk baits on a slooow stop and go retrieve. 3/8 ounce spinnerbaits in white on a yo-yo slow retrieve. Cover lots of water and key on pre stage spots like upstream of secondary points and drains. Work ditches from deep to shallow keying on the upstream side of the inside bend as fish use these spots to pre stage before they move up to spawn. Early females can hold in these pre stage spots for some time waiting for the water temp and moon phase to line up for the spawn. The jig bite hasn’t materialized yet, neither has the weightless soft plastic bite. Be careful as Fork is full and the stumps are just below the surface. Wear your pdf. and let some one know where you are fishing. See you on the great Lake Fork!! As with every year guides and motels book up quickly.
