Lake Fork Bass Fishing Report February 3, 2009

This week on Lake Fork the water level is about a foot low and the water temperature is in the low 40’s. The overall condition of the lake is excellent this year. It is hawg time. The larger females are making their yearly move to the shallows in preparation to spawn. This is the time to catch the trophy of a lifetime. Lake Fork is the place! The share a lunker program is starting to pick up some fish in the south part of the state. I have recieved several reports from Texas parks and wildlife from Lake Conroe and others in south Texas so I expect Lake Fork to be in the news shortly. A share a lunker fish is a bass over 13 pounds. We have been fishing main and secondary points and all the way to the back of creeks. We have been checking flats, cuts and drains near spawning areas. If you catch a fish or two out of an area go back and work it again. It seems that the fish like something special this time of year and it may reload or have multiple fish trying to hold in the same area. Weapon of choice has been the lipless crank bait aka rattle trap in you guessed it red. This is a tried and true method on Lake Fork as long as I can remember. There isn’t a better bait to get a reaction bite on this time of year. They are noisy and bright. Another bait is the white spinnerbait. I fish the Stanley wedge in 3/4 ounce. I like the thump it makes and so do the fish. Slow roll it along creek channels and hang on! Don’t forget to bring your suspending jerk baits and your jigs with you as these are stellar choices for cold water. Speaking of cold weather, hypothermia sets in quick so wear your pfd and check it if you can in a swimming pool with all of your warm gear on to make sure it keeps your head up so you can swim. I know it sounds silly to go to a pool all dressed but it will give you confidence if you have to use it in a crisis. I hope this helps you catch that giant and we’ll see you on Lake Fork!
