Lake Fork Bass Fishing Report March 2, 2009

This week on Lake Fork the water temperature is in the high 40’s to low 50’s depending where you are on the lake. The lake level is a foot low and the lake is in excellent condition for the spawn. After this cold front a warming trend is expected and the weather is expected to be great for the weekend with highs in the 80’s! This ought to set the spawn into high gear as the full moon is on the 10th of March. The fish should be on the move to the back of the creeks and into the spawning pockets. My bet is that another program fish or two will be caught before the 10th! Fish a lipless crank or a small crank over the grass and make sure you check the timber along the way as some fish have been suspending on the wood. Plastics such as the weightless stick-o’s and fluke type baits are starting to catch a few fish and this pattern will come on with the flood of fish heading to the backs. Texas rigged or wacky, these baits are hard to beat when the fish move to the banks to spawn. Another presentation you haven’t heard much about is the shakey head worm rig. This bait will be on one of my rods this month as well as a jig and pig. Remember when you fish plastics early this month fish slow as the water temp/ isn’t conducive to them chasing yet. Fish an area with reaction baits to find fish and then slow down with the plastics to seine the area to catch the fish that didn’t react . Suspending jerk baits are another type of reaction bait that work good on Lake Fork this time of year. Fish them slow with a couple of twitches and a pause , the colder the water the longer the pause. I hope this helps you catch that trophy you are looking for and we’ll see you on Lake Fork!
