Circular Bass Fishing: A Different Look at the Sport

It’s not the Sports Illustrated of bass fishing that Bassmaster is. It’s not the traditional “how-to” or “when and where” approach that is usually portrayed in most bass fishing magazines.

Instead, Circular Bass Fishing takes an in-depth look at the heart, mind, and soul of true bass fishing outdoorsmen. From many different angles, this magazine breaks down concepts and mindsets built on proven mental attitudes. It seeks to provide a deeper understanding of awareness, perception, and the mental side of fishing.

The articles explore both the biological and environmental aspects of the sport as well as the angler’s perspective. Many of the crucial elements of bass fishing and the outdoor experience, things that have rarely been captured in photographs or writing, are explored and shared within its pages.

After reading the first issue of Circular Bass Fishing from cover to cover, I felt it had already moved me up a step on my own personal fishing ladder.

Some of the concepts presented in the magazine are things I had experienced before and knew existed. However, a series of experiences alone does not always reveal the underlying phenomenon. When you see those ideas put into words on paper, they often become clearer. The next time you encounter a similar situation on the water, you approach it with greater understanding and awareness, moving closer to what the magazine calls “Total Understanding.”

The Philosophy of Fishing

This magazine is unlike anything most anglers have ever read.

It explores the philosophy of fishing, the psychology of the bass fisherman, and the bionomics that anglers encounter on the water. These themes are presented alongside many other interesting ideas within the broader sphere of bass fishing.

While some of the concepts could be considered “high-tech” in their thinking, the writing style remains enjoyable and easy to follow. The ideas are presented clearly so that readers can absorb and understand them without difficulty.

Rick Clunn’s “In The Flow”

Legendary tournament angler Rick Clunn has been involved with the magazine from the beginning and will continue contributing to each issue with his column titled:

“In the Flow with Rick Clunn.”

This provides an extraordinary opportunity for anglers to learn from one of the most accomplished tournament fishermen in the history of the sport.

In his article appearing in Volume I, Clunn invites readers into his personal “zone,” sharing the concepts and perspectives that have helped lead to his remarkable success on the tournament trail.

According to Circular Bass Fishing, the “In the Flow with Rick Clunn” column will continue in future issues as a series of informative articles presented in a building-block format, gradually developing deeper insights into the mental aspects of successful fishing.

Bass Fishing on the Information Superhighway

Since July 26, 1995, Circular Bass Fishing has been published on what was then known as the Information Superhighway—the Internet.

For those unfamiliar with the Internet, it represents a worldwide connection of computer users, with more than thirty million subscribers currently linked together through this growing network.

Pat McCarty masterminds the layout of the magazine and is responsible for bringing the publication into cyberspace. In fact, Circular Bass Fishing is believed to be the world’s first bass fishing magazine published on the Internet, making it one of the most modern fishing publications available.

To read the online edition, users can log onto their Internet service provider and go to the following address:

The growth of this online community has been phenomenal and is projected to more than double in size within the next year.

“Attitude Is Everything”

The feature article in Volume I is written by the magazine’s publisher, Phil Whittemore.

Titled “Attitude Is Everything,” the article serves as an important reminder of the state of mind anglers should maintain while fishing. Whittemore presents firsthand accounts in which an angler’s mental outlook became the deciding factor between catching fish and going home empty-handed.

Future issues of the magazine will continue to explore important themes such as spirit, character, awareness, and personal discipline.

Fishing Beyond Technique

Circular Bass Fishing focuses on a dimension of the sport that many anglers may never have seriously considered. The magazine encourages readers to focus their subconscious awareness and integrate it into their overall fishing strategy.

By developing this deeper understanding, anglers can add a powerful new dimension to their fishing approach.

For those striving to improve and achieve greater success on the water, this publication offers an opportunity to become a more balanced and thoughtful fisherman and to join what the magazine calls the “Leading Edge” of Circular Bass Fishing.
