The current water level at Choke Canyon Reservoir is significantly low, reflecting the "boom or bust" nature of this South Texas fishery.

As of April 1, 2026, the water level is 178.97 feet above mean sea level.

Quick Stats

  • Current Level: 178.97 ft (NGVD29)

  • Normal (Conservation) Pool: 220.50 ft

  • Difference: 41.53 feet below normal pool.

  • Percent Full: Approximately 7.7% of conservation capacity.

What This Means for Fishing

With the lake more than 41 feet low, the landscape has changed drastically:

  • Habitat: Most of the traditional shoreline brush and "buck brush" is now high and dry. The bass will be concentrated in the main river channel of the Frio and the deepest remaining brush piles or rock ledges.

  • Boating Safety: This is a critical time to be careful. Submerged timber and islands that are usually deep under the surface are now major navigation hazards. Many boat ramps may be closed or have very limited access.

  • Access: At this level, the Calliham Unit is typically your best bet for a functional ramp, but always check with the State Park office at (361) 786-3868 before making the drive.

The positive side of low water is that it "shrinks" the haystack, making it easier to find the needles (the fish) once you locate the remaining deep-water structure!
