Bluegill Family Fishing Tournament Awards Thousands in Prizes

There’s something special about a kid with a fishing rod and a bluegill tugging on the other end.

No pressure. No crowds. Just a quiet pond, a little patience, and the kind of smile that reminds you why we all started fishing in the first place.

That spirit was alive and well at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, where the annual Bluegill Family Fishing Tournament brought together 57 teams for a day that was less about competition—and more about connection.

Still, when the scales settled, there were some bragging rights to go along with the memories.

The tournament awarded roughly $3,000 in donated prizes, recognizing both the heaviest stringers of sunfish and the biggest individual catch. Prize packages went to the top 10 teams, along with honors for big fish.

Taking top honors were Pam and Zay Ridgle of Brownsboro, who weighed in a winning stringer of 2.6 pounds. They didn’t stop there—they also landed the tournament’s biggest sunfish at 0.78 pounds. Their haul included an Xbox 360, fishing gear, gift cards, and assorted prizes valued at around $1,000.

Not a bad day on the water.

Fishing took place in the ponds at the Fisheries Center as well as nearby Lake Athens, with teams made up of one adult and one youth—no family ties required, just a shared love of fishing.

And in keeping with the spirit of the event, every team walked away with something: a plush toy courtesy of Aaron’s Sales and Lease Ownership of Athens. A small gesture, maybe—but for a young angler, it’s the kind of thing that sticks.

The leaderboard rounded out with strong finishes across the board:

  • Second place: Leroy Hallman and Calie Spivey, Arlington
  • Third place: Colton Seeton and Austin Sheffield, Athens
  • Fourth place: Mark Compton and Lance Compton, Chandler
  • Fifth place: Margaret Compton and Eli Ridgle, Brownsboro
  • Sixth place: Bart Smith and Tori Smith, Athens
  • Seventh place: Robert McGallon and Austin McGallon, Mabank
  • Eighth place: Coleen Compton and Landon Compton, Chandler
  • Ninth place: Alisa Johnson and Kaenan Johnson, Chandler
  • Tenth place: Jeff Boyer and Layne Boyer, Jacksonville

Behind the scenes, a strong group of local sponsors helped make the event possible, including the Lake Athens Property Owners Association, Aaron’s Sales and Lease Ownership, Best Western Royal Mountain Inn, Holiday Inn Express & Suites – Athens, Walmart Supercenter of Athens, Cole Air Conditioning and Appliance, Chicken Express, and First State Bank.

But beyond the prizes and the standings, that’s not what anyone will remember most.

They’ll remember the first bite.
The laughter.
The moment a child held up a fish like it was the biggest in the lake.

Because tournaments like this aren’t just about catching fish—
they’re about catching something that lasts a whole lot longer.
