Mercury Racing Announces 2003 APBA Offshore Contingency Awards

There’s fast… and then there’s offshore racing fast—the kind that rattles your bones, throws salt in your face, and separates the serious contenders from the rest of the pack in a hurry. Out there, horsepower isn’t just a number—it’s a statement. And in 2003, Mercury Racing made sure the winners had something to show for it.

With a $75,000 contingency prize purse on the line, Mercury Racing rewarded the top performers in the APBA Offshore Racing GMC Pro Series National and World Championships. The program recognized the top five national points finishers—as well as World Champions—running Mercury Racing-approved engines and sterndrives during the 2003 season.

And that was just the beginning.

Mercury Racing also distributed an additional $75,000 across individual APBA National GMC Pro Series events in Factory 1, Factory 2, Super Cat Light, and Super Vee classes. Race winners in those divisions earned a $1,500 promotional credit per victory—fuel for the next run, so to speak.

At the end of the season, the National Pro Series title contenders saw their efforts pay off based on total accumulated points. Top five finishers in each class received contingency awards ranging from $500 to $6,000, while World Champions took home an additional $4,500 promotional credit.

Those credits, applied toward Mercury Racing engines, propellers, parts, and accessories, ensure one thing: winning today helps build the boat for tomorrow.

In offshore racing, nothing comes easy. Every mile is earned the hard way—through rough water, mechanical strain, and the kind of focus that leaves no room for error. By season’s end, the teams standing at the top aren’t just fast—they’re proven.

Programs like this contingency payout don’t just reward victory. They help keep the sport moving forward, one race at a time, one rebuild at a time, one throttle push at a time.

Because out there, when the flags drop and the engines wind up, it’s not just about crossing the finish line first.

It’s about building something that can do it again.
