Yamaha SR230 Wins Boating Industry’s

In a boat market crowded with look-alikes and rising price tags, it takes something different to turn heads.

That is exactly what Yamaha did with its SR230, a 23-foot, 10-passenger open-bow runabout that not only broke from tradition, but also walked away with one of the industry’s top honors. At the Miami International Boat Show in Miami Beach, Florida, the Yamaha SR230 captured the 2003 National Marine Manufacturers Association Innovation Award, earning top honors in the Runabout Category.

That is no small feat in a field packed with established, higher-priced competitors.

The award was judged by a panel representing Boating Writers International, and according to presenter Michael Verdon, the Yamaha entry stood apart from the crowd for more than one reason.

“Our only question in judging this product is why another boat manufacturer didn’t come up with this before,” Verdon said. “We liked the fact that this was the world’s first jet boat with twin four-stroke engines. But we loved the innovative design of the transom, with its semicircular pattern.”

That distinctive stern layout proved to be one of the boat’s biggest calling cards. The large lounge area at the transom opens up a whole new set of possibilities, not only for watersports, but for simple comfort and socializing as well. At anchor, passengers can gather around a table for drinks or snacks, turning the stern into a floating patio as much as a boarding platform.

According to Verdon, that kind of practical thinking is exactly what helped separate the SR230 from more traditional runabouts.

“Yamaha deserves credit for this design, which is a strong addition to the runabout category,” he said.

For Yamaha, the award carried extra weight because the Runabout Category includes many of the best-known boat builders in the world. Winning there was more than a nice headline. It was a statement.

“We were so excited to have the SR230 win this award against such stiff competition,” said Steve Lawler, public relations manager for Yamaha WaterCraft Group. “It proves that Yamaha is not only a contender, but a leader in the family runabout segment.”

From bow to stern, the SR230 was designed with family boating in mind. Yamaha officials say the boat was built around the things family buyers care most about: comfort, ride quality, interior space, towing power, and value.

“We know exactly what the family buyer is looking for,” said Scott Watkins, product development manager for Yamaha’s boat division. “They’re looking for seat comfort, a comfortable ride, interior space, quick acceleration for towing, and value.”

The SR230 checks those boxes with an all-new hull featuring increased deadrise for a smoother ride, a roomy interior layout designed to maximize passenger comfort, 14 storage compartments, and a center walk-through transom that improves space and accessibility. Power comes from twin four-stroke engines, giving the boat what Yamaha says is best-in-class acceleration for towing skiers, wake riders, and other watersports enthusiasts.

And then there is the price.

With a sticker of $26,999, the SR230 came in roughly $10,000 less than many comparable models, giving it a strong value angle in addition to its innovative design.

The Miami show did more than bring Yamaha a trophy. It also brought buyers. Yamaha reported that boat sales at the show increased 120 percent over the previous year, adding even more momentum to the SR230’s debut.

Yamaha WaterCraft Group, a subsidiary of Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., markets and distributes Yamaha boats and WaveRunner personal watercraft throughout the United States.

In the end, the SR230 did more than win an award. It proved that smart design, family-friendly features, and real value can still shake up a class long dominated by expensive tradition.

For Yamaha, this was not just a victory lap.

It was a shot across the bow.
